Napa Valley's Rich Wine HistoryNapa Valley is home to over 200 wineries and is the number one travel destination for visitors in the state of California. The climate and soil here make Napa Valley the ultimate place to grow the grapes that makes this area world famous for its wines. The area has quite a varied history when it comes to wine production, from the earliest wineries of the 1800s to today. The Indian inhabitants first enjoyed the abundance of wild grapes that covered the region, but it wasn’t until the 1830s that the first vineyard was planted. As more people realized the potential of this area as a haven for growing wine grapes the Wine Country began to grow. The industry boomed until the region had a battle with Phylloxera, a tiny insect, which kills grapevines by attacking their roots. The area recovered from this only to face an even bigger nemesis. Prohibition almost ended the production of wine for this region. Minimal production was continued through this time and only for religious and medicinal purposes. It took many years after prohibition ended for the Napa Valley region to continue on the path to world recognition that had begun nearly a century earlier in the famous California Gold Rush Days. Today wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs from all parts of the globe flow into Napa Valley for freshly poured glasses of cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot, pinot noir, and sauvignon blanc - just some of the wines produced here.
